Africa's Cheetah Generation

George Ayittey, a Ghanaian economist, author and president of the Free Africa Foundation in Washington DC, wrote a book titled ?Africa Unchained: The Blueprint to Africa's Future? in 2006. In the book, the American University Professor sought to answer the question of why Africa is considered poor in spite of its vast natural resources. According to him, the answer is obvious: economic freedom was denied to them, first by foreign colonial powers and now by indigenous leaders with similarly oppressive practices, he opines. As war and conflict replaced peace, Africa's infrastructure crumbled.

However, in a bold attempt devoid of bemoaning the myriad of difficulties facing the continent, the celebrated economist, proposes a program of development?a way forward for Africa.

Africa Unchained probes how Africa can modernize, build, and improve its indigenous institutions, and argues forcefully that Africa should build and expand upon traditions of free markets and free trade rather than maintaining exploitative economic structures. This plan has been termed as controversial, and since the publishing of the book half a decade ago, has ruffled many feathers both on the African continent and abroad.

The book also highlighted two generations in Africa for which I will dwell on and discuss further. After a meeting with Professor Ayittey, I joined forces with young Ghanaian and African professionals termed as the cheetah generation, to highlight issues of socio-economic importance in Africa, mainly seeing challenges on the continent as opportunities to create wealth and jobs. Professor Ayittey talks about the Cheetah and Hippo generations in Africa at TED talk in 2007_Tanzania. He further adds that, since he coined the phrase ?cheetah generation in his 2006 book, it has been used several times without recourse to what it really means. Below is a description of the two generations in Africa?Hippo and Cheetah?and how the latter is poised in his own words to 'take Africa back one village at a time'

African elites may be classified into two groups: The Hippo and the Cheetah generations.

1. The Hippos are of old 1960s era and mentality -- stodgy, pudgy, and wedded to the old ?colonialism-imperialism? paradigm with an abiding faith in the potency of the state. They sit tight in their air-conditioned government offices, comfortable in their belief that the state can solve all of Africa's problems. All the state needs are more power and more foreign aid. Intellectually stigmatized, they are stuck in their muddy colonialist pedagogical patch.

And they would ferociously defend their territory since that is what provides them with their wealth. They care less if the whole country collapses around them, but are content as long as their pond is secure.

2. The Cheetahs are the new and angry generation of African graduates and professionals, who look at African issues and problems from a totally different perspective. They are dynamic, intellectually agile, and pragmatic. They may be called the ?restless generation? but are Africa's new hope. The Cheetahs are not so intellectually astigmatized. Whereas the Hippos constantly see problems, the Cheetahs see business opportunities. They do not wait for governments or foreign donors. The cheetah generation has no qualms about getting their hands ?dirty.? They recognize that solving the problems of the poor can make money, and there is nothing immoral about that. After all, that is how the wealthy in the Western countries made their money: By creating a product or service, that addresses the needs or problems of the people. Bill Gates, for example, made billions in fortune by creating Micro-soft computer software. He did not become rich by being the president of the U.S., as is the case in many African countries.

The Cheetah Generation is a new social/business network for this angry generation of African graduates and professionals. This generation believes that the solutions to Africa's myriad of problems are already there in Africa itself. The talents, the skills and the entrepreneurship are all there and can be found, not only in the bustling informal economy but in the traditional sector as well. Market women, traders, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, food vendors, kente/bark cloth weavers, cattle herdsmen, sculptors, and fishermen, to name a few, are all testament to the ancient traditions of entrepreneurship and vibrant trading activity. Timbucktu, for example, was known in historical annals as a great market town, as were Kano, Salaga, Mombasa and Sofala. This innovative social/business network promotes the belief that it is through entrepreneurship, free markets, and just leadership that Africa will regain its pre-colonial illustrious prosperity.

Cheetah Generation offers a unique opportunity for Africans and friends of Africa to build upon Africa's own market tradition by fostering entrepreneurship as the most viable solution to making Africa a land of freedom, opportunity, and prosperity.

In the mist of the challenges of conflict, bad leadership, and poverty, Africa's young and dynamic generation sees opportunities. Hence, the mission is to share ideas on Africa's economic development and network with investors and African entrepreneurs in restoring the continent's economic freedom.

NKoreans line streets for Kim Jong Il's funeral (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? Tens of thousands of North Koreans lined snow-covered streets on Wednesday, wailing and clutching their chests as a black hearse carried late leader Kim Jong Il's body through the capital for a final farewell that ended with a 21-gun salute.

The funeral procession on a gray, freezing day was accompanied by top military and party officials, but there was little doubt who the leader was. Son and successor Kim Jong Un served as head mourner, walking with one hand on the hearse, the other raised in salute, his head bowed against the wind.

State media ? which over the past week have called Kim Jong Un "great successor," "supreme leader" and "sagacious leader" ? made it clear that the family's hold on power would extend to a third generation, declaring the country in the younger Kim's "warm care."

At the end of the procession, Kim Jong Un again walked along with the limousine with his hand cocked in a salute. He stood head-bowed with top officials as rifles fired 21 times, then saluted again as goose-stepping soldiers carrying flags and rifles marched by.

The funeral procession, which began and ended at Kumsusan Memorial Palace, where Kim's body had lain in state and where his father, North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, is preserved, passed by huge crowds of mourners, most of them standing in the snow with their heads bare, many screaming and flailing their arms as soldiers struggled to keep them from spilling onto the road.

"How can the sky not cry?" a weeping soldier standing in the snow said to state TV. "The people ... are all crying tears of blood."

The scenes of grief provide a clue at how effective North Korea has been in building a personality cult around Kim Jong Il even though people have suffered greatly from food shortages and the United Nations and others cite a lack of human rights. The North's neighbors and the United States are also pressing Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

Kim, who led the nation with an iron fist following his father Kim Il Sung's death in 1994, died of a heart attack Dec. 17 at age 69, according to state media.

Even as North Koreans mourned the loss of the second leader the nation has known, the transition of power to Kim Jong Un was under way. The young man, who is in late 20s, is already being hailed by state media as the "supreme leader" of the party, state and army.

Like his father's in 1994, Kim Jong Il's coffin was wrapped in a red flag. A limousine carrying a huge portrait of a smiling Kim led the procession, and soldiers followed the hearse and lined the streets. A national memorial service will take place at noon Thursday, state media said. Foreign diplomats in Pyongyang were told to prepare to attend the service.

Outside observers will be watching Wednesday's footage closely for clues on the makeup of Kim Jong Un's inner circle.

Walking behind him was Jang Song Thaek, Kim Jong Il's brother-in-law and a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission who is expected to play a crucial role in helping Kim Jong Un take power.

Also escorting the limousine were military chief Ri Yong Ho and People's Armed Forces Minster Kim Yong Chun. Their presence indicates they will be important players as the younger Kim consolidates his leadership. Top Workers' Party officials Choe Thae Bok and Kim Ki Nam and senior military officer Kim Jong Gak also were prominent positions, according to Seoul's Unification Ministry.

"It shows they will be core powers in North Korea," said Yoo Ho-yeol, a professor at Korea University in South Korea. "Particularly, Jang Song Thaek and Ri Yong Ho will be key to Kim Jong Un's leadership."

The military presence at the funeral Wednesday also suggests Kim will uphold his father's trademark military-first policy, Yoo said.

After the funeral, the young Kim is expected to cement his power by formally assuming command of the 1.2 million-strong military, and becoming general secretary of the Workers' Party and chairman of the party's Central Military Commission, Yoo said.

Kim Jong Il's two other sons, Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Chol, have not been spotted.

Kim Jong Un made his public debut just last year with a promotion to four-star general and an appointment as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party.

Earlier, state television also replayed images of missiles being fired and the April 2009 long-range rocket launch that earned North Korea strengthened U.N. sanctions. The U.S., South Korea and other nations called it a test for a missile designed to strike the United States; North Korea said the rocket sent a communications satellite into space.

North Korea's officials have pledged their loyalty to Kim Jong Il's son.

In an essay paying homage to Kim Jong Il on Wednesday, Workers' Party mouthpiece Rodong Sinmun said North Korea under his leadership had been "dignified as a country that manufactured and launched artificial satellites and accessed nukes," referring to the country's nuclear program.

"Thanks to these legacies, we do not worry about the destiny of ourselves and posterity at this time of national mourning," the essay said, carried in English by the Korean Central News Agency.

"Supreme leader of our party and people Kim Jong Un takes warm care of the people left by Kim Jong Il. Every moment of Kim Jong Un's life is replete with loving care and solicitude for the people," the essay said.

Wednesday's procession had a stronger military presence than in 1994.

Kim Jong Il, who ushered in a "military first" era when he took power, celebrated major occasions with lavish, meticulously choreographed parades designed to show off the nation's military might, such as the October 2010 display when he introduced his son to the world.

Paul John Knowles, Serial Killer, Blamed For 1974 Killing Of Ga. Girl Ima Jean Sanders

ATLANTA -- Georgia investigators used DNA and other evidence to link the slaying of a 13-year-old girl who went missing in 1974 with a serial killer who was blamed for murdering at least 18 people, authorities said Wednesday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said agents were "reasonably confident" that Ima Jean Sanders was killed 37 years ago by Paul John Knowles.

Ima Jean was living with her mother and her 4-year-old sister in Warner Robins, Ga., when she disappeared in August 1974. Her sister remembers getting upset when Ima Jean told her to stay at home while she hopped in a van with some friends. She never saw her family again.

"That's the last anyone ever heard of her," her mother Betty Wisecup told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "She up and disappeared and we had never heard anything about it."

About two years later, authorities found skeletal remains in a wooded area in Peach County in the central part of the state, but investigators at the time could only tell that they belonged to a young white female. Her family, haunted by her disappearance, was left wondering about what happened.

"It's been almost 38 years and I'm thinking maybe she has amnesia, maybe she got into a car wreck and no one ever found her," said Ima Jean's sister, Sharron Chessher "We just never knew. Now we do."

The break in the case came in January, after a Texas investigator working on another cold case realized that data from Ima Jean's killing wasn't entered into a database designed to match unidentified remains with missing persons cases. Wisecup, who lives in Beaumont, Texas, submitted DNA, and investigators said this week it matched the skeletal remains.

"If you talk about a proverbial cold case, this would have been it," said special agent Gary Rothwell. "It was the family that never forgot."

Hard-to-find documents were also used to help link Knowles to the killing. Amid the crime spree, Knowles mailed audio confessions of his crimes to a Florida attorney, but the recordings were never released publicly and the transcripts were ruined a few years ago by flooding at a Macon courthouse.

Investigators tracked down a 1975 letter buried in the state archives that was written by a former U.S. attorney who summarized Knowles' confessions.

The letter said Knowles picked up a young female hitchhiker named "Alma" in August 1974 and brought her to a wooded area outside Macon, near where the remains were found. He raped her, strangled her and then left her body, the letter said. He returned to the area about two weeks later to bury the jawbone.

Knowles was captured in November 1974 near McDonough, Ga., after he kidnapped a Florida state trooper and another man. He killed both of them. Knowles was shot to death a month later trying to escape custody.

Warner Robins police Capt. Chris Rooks, who helped investigate the killing, said he hopes it brings the family a "sense of closure they would have never had."

Ima Jean's relatives were still struggling with the news. Chessher, for one, said learning what happened to her sister was "like having the air sucked out of the room."

The family is trying to raise money to bring Ima Jean's remains to Texas, where Ima Jean's mother will place them in an urn in her living room and later bury them in a family plot. Chessher said only then will the family be able to start to heal.

"To know the details of what she saw, looking through her eyes, it doesn't get any easier," Chessher said. "Even when we get her home and properly bury her, knowing what that man did will never leave our hearts and souls. I know that we have to forgive, but it's going to take a long time."

Why I Got Started

I had been involved in school sports my entire life; athletics is not something new to me. But, I certainly admit that the temptations of a less than healthy lifestyle (my personal relationship with pizza, especially) stress and not having my goals clear in my head had led me to a body that wasn't bad, per se, but was not anything to shake a stick at. What is funny is I always knew I had something special inside of me, some type of unique drive that I do not know if I can describe effectively, but it is what I dig down to every day to push me on.

My life was never an easy one. I lost my father at age 5, my family's home flooded at age 7 and I was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia) at age 9. Cancer is the destroyer of bodies. The effect of 3 years of chemotherapy on my body is still being studied for late effects.

But I fought it, overcame it and lived through it to tell the story. I grew my hair back, I learned how to walk for the second time in my life and am part of an amazing Camp, Camp TaKumTa, a week long camp in So. Hero, Vermont for children who have or have had cancer.

Getting fit couldn't be as hard as surviving.

How I Did It

The first few lessons that my trainer taught me were as follows: you want the body, you have to lift weights and if you want to burn fat, you have to eat. Both of which I was not doing. In fact, I was not doing it properly until I sat myself down in April and had a little chat?with myself.

I had this great opportunity to improve myself. I had found a gym with people that care, a family, and a trainer and coach that had the tools to guide me to whatever goal I wanted to reach. A no brainer and what I wanted all along! If I did not take advantage of what was given to me, then it would be my failure and this was my life, my goal.

I had to refocus and remind myself that it was a hard road but it was what I wanted. I started my new workout booklet that day, April 1, 2011. My food was perfect, my workout was perfect and I was determined to flip the switch. I got a picture taken that day in my swimsuit, and said goodbye to the old me.

Fast forwarding to today, I am over 30 pounds leaner, stronger in heart, mind and body and healthier and more fit than I have ever been in my entire life. In 7 months I went from an asthmatic who would get sick fairly often to girl that competes in fitness games, does Boot Camps at Hoover Dam (Columbus, OH), flips 220lb tires, swings ropes, sweats profusely and can now breathe.

I can squat and deadlift 175lbs, I can run mile after mile and can be proud to put on a glittery bikini and practice competition posing in front of others. My progression is what blows my trainer away. What blows me away is the support and love that I get and the inspiration that I give others. I never thought others would follow my training, much less care or be inspired by it.

What surprises me the most is that daily I get messages, calls, texts, emails from people from my past, family, friends, you name it, telling me I inspired them to lose weight and they are 10lbs down, or they want to know what I am doing, how I am doing it, what I eat! It's remarkable!

I do not make it a secret either. I feel that if I was blessed to be put on this path, maybe my purpose is to share it with others and spread the word that anyone can be fit, reach their goals and just feel good.

Suggestions for Others

Over the course of 7 months, I have learned a great deal about fitness and health. What I tell others is that while it's not everyone's desire to compete on stage in bodybuilding, everyone can make changes to be healthier, more fit and feel better.

I am frequently asked a variety of questions but most people want to know the secret to getting fit and staying that way. Well, here it is: there are no secrets and no one specific path to achieving your fitness goals. There is no special pill that you take or fad diet that can realistically change you forever.

The change starts with you. My secret is consistent, clean eating and exercise. (I know, who would have thought!) If you want to look good in a bikini, then lift weights. If you want to boost your metabolism, then eat.

If you want to improve your overall fitness and health, educate yourself and seek out those that are fit and talk to them and learn by doing what they do. Gain as much knowledge as you can and apply that to your life.

Family hopes $150B civil award prompts charges (AP)

HOUSTON ? An attorney who persuaded a Texas jury to award a $150 billion judgment says he hopes the civil verdict will persuade prosecutors to seek charges against a man he says set a boy on fire.

Robbie Middleton survived for 12 years before dying last year of a rare skin cancer that attorneys argue was related to burns he suffered on his eighth birthday.

Lawyer Craig Sico and Middleton's family say they likely won't see any money from the verdict reached this week in La Grange. However, they hope it prompts a renewed investigation into Don Wilburn Collins, who Middleton accused of setting him on fire.

Prosecutors say Collins never faced charges, in part because inconsistencies in evidence. Collins, in prison on an unrelated conviction, is to be released next year.

8 US soldiers charged with death of fellow GI

Eight members of the US military are being charged in connection with the death of Private Danny Chen. Investigators reportedly uncovered evidence that Chen was the target of ethnic slurs and hazing before he was shot in Afghanistan. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

Eight U.S. soldiers have been charged in the death of 19-year-old Private Danny Chen, who was found shot to death in a guard tower in southern Afghanistan.

It was first thought to have been a suicide, but the military's investigation found that the Asian-American had been the target of ethnic slurs and physical attacks by his fellow soldiers.

Chen was found dead?Oct. 3 with?a gunshot wound below the chin;?it's not?clear from?the charges whether the eight soldiers are accused of killing him or whether officials are alleging that their mistreatment of Chen led him to take his own life.

The military said the soldiers from Chen's company face charges that include dereliction of duty, assault, negligent homicide and involuntary manslaughter.

Chen's parents welcomed the charges Wednesday during an emotional news conference?at the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in New York's Chinatown, where their?only child?grew up and went to school.

"Over two months of agonizing over the loss, it is of some comfort and relief to learn that the Army is taking this seriously,"?Chen's mother, Su Zhen,?49,?said through tears?in Chinese?as a family friend?translated. "(We) hope that the truth will come out and hopefully that what happened will not happen again."

Zhen,?who?came to the United States in 1987?from Taishan in southern China,?said she had not wanted?her only child -- a good student who had a lot of friends -- to join the Army. She said she "could not figure out why they (the soldiers) would do this to him."

A portrait of Army Pvt. Danny Chen is placed on a car in his funeral procession in Chinatown on Oct. 13 in New York City.

Chen's?father, Yantao Chen, 49, a cook who moved to America from Taishan in 1989, said through the?family friend?that?while well wishing "gives them comfort ? he realizes that Danny will never return, but it gives him hope."

The translating friend was Frank Gee, 72, an Army veteran, who said the family heard about the charges Tuesday from a lieutenant colonel in Afghanistan. He said they were expecting them, though Zhen cried when she heard the news.

"It's rather tough. ... The only child, especially (in a) Chinese family, a boy," Gee said. "They are learning to cope with it."

Chen's aunt, Lucy Chen, 45, said he was like "sunshine": "Danny (was) a very good boy ... We miss him."

Elizabeth OuYang, New York branch president of OCA, a national civil rights organization serving Asian Pacific Americans,?said?Chen was not depressed but had suffered emotional and physical abuse during his time in the military:?he was dragged from his bed and made to crawl while rocks were thrown at his back?and was forced to hold liquid in his mouth while doing chin-ups during his?two months?in Afghanistan. He was deployed there in August, and had been in the military just seven months.

"Whether suicide or homicide, those responsible for mistreating Danny caused his death and they must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," OuYang said at the news conference, noting that forensic expert Henry Lee would?conduct an independent autopsy.

Army says Danny Chen was bullied before his death. WNBC's Katy Tur reports.

She said she and community leaders?had a meeting last week at the Pentagon to put forward reforms to prevent such abuse and that they have another one on Jan. 4, where the commanding officer's report would be shared with them. She said they were told that a separate report by the Army's Criminal Investigation Command would be finished by the end of February.

"Clearly the Army?s diversity training is not effective," she said.?"It's not worth it (to serve) if we can't be protected from people who are supposed to be on our side."

Though the news of the charges was "amazing," she said it was only the beginning and that they did not want the soldiers to be able to plea to lesser charges, noting they wanted "a loud signal sent that our lives are not cheap."

Some 3,000 Asian Americans were recruited to serve in the U.S. military in 2009, OuYang wrote in October.

Rep. Nydia M. Vel?zquez, D-N.Y., called the day "bittersweet" and demanded a "clear accounting of the facts." She said minorities make up 35 percent of active duty forces.

"We need to know the whole truth," Vel?zquez said. "If there is a message to everyone in this country, especially to the armed forces, it's that racial intolerance and discrimination have no place in our military and we need to have that message clearly conveyed today."

Wellington Chen, executive director of Chinatown Partnership Local Development Corporation, cited a Chinese expression in saying the community could handle the truth and didn't want it to come out in bits and pieces: "If you have a fire, you cannot cover it with paper. The truth will come out."

The soldiers are still in Afghanistan but have been assigned to a different base, removed from their duty positions and placed under closer supervision, the military said.

An Army criminal investigation into the circumstances of Chen's death remains open,?a spokesman for the U.S. Army's Criminal Investigation Command told Reuters.

"Aside from investigating the actual cause and manner of Private Chen's death, we are also investigating the circumstances leading up to his death," U.S.-based spokesman Chris Grey said in an email.

Pattern of abuse
Last week, hundreds of supporters held a vigil and demanded answers in Chen's death. A group of community leaders at the vigil said it had a meeting at the Pentagon recently about the treatment of Asian soldiers in the military, and wanted the commanding officers to be punished.

At the vigil last Thursday, the soldier's family ramped up pressure on investigators, reading aloud letters Chen had sent home, reflecting the state of isolation he was in from being harassed by his comrades and superiors.

"'Feb. 27, 2011: Since I am the only Chinese person here, everyone knows me by Chen,'" read his cousin Banny Chen. "'They ask if I'm from China a few times a day... They also call out my name Chen in a goat-like voice sometimes for no reason.'"

"'People crack jokes about Chinese people all the time. I'm running out of jokes to come back at them.'"

Chen's death is one of several recent cases of alleged hazing in the military, according to OCA.

One of those was Lance Cpl. Harry Lew, who was hazed by fellow Marines, according to a U.S. military report on his April 3 death. The military charged three Marines?-- accused of beating Lew hours before he killed himself -- with hazing and they face court martial, The San Jose Mercury News reported.

"This is not the only two that we are aware of," Wellington Chen said. "This year in May another one shot himself across the river in New Jersey in front of his 60-year-old widow mother."

"We clearly see this as a pattern, it doesn't take a genius to figure it out," he added. "To turn a human being into a killing machine, you need to condition them and sometimes once you unleash it, you may not be able to control it, that's the unfortunate part."

Lawyer Mathew B. Tully, an expert in military law and a former Army soldier, wrote in an article earlier this year that the "military?s zero-tolerance position on hazing has not completely eradicated the practice."

"While some instances of hazing are as easy to identify as the marks they leave on victims, verbal or psychological offenses are not as black and white," he wrote. "For example, in 2007 three Marines based in Yorktown, Va., were charged with hazing subordinates after making them stand in formation for five hours and perform cleaning duties to the point of exhaustion, without food or sleep."

"I couldn't think of a better way to open up this competition tonight," Paula Abdul gushed after Nicole Scherzinger's protege Josh Krajcik belted out a duet with Alanis Morissette.

"I thought that you were a little intimidated at the beginning," said Simon, giving him an unofficial 8 out of 10.

While the audience was still swooning over Josh's outstanding effort, Chris Rene hit the stage alongside Avril Lavigne, sending up a performance that Nicole admitted felt "a little shaky at the top."

Paula, the eternal optimist, defended the number, explaining that the spirit of the show concentrates more on the energy of the artist than being perfect note-for-note. L.A. Reid and Simon both agreed that the song, if released as a single, would be a hit.

Simon's pride and joy, Melanie Amaro, made history singing I Believe I Can Fly with the song's creator, R. Kelly, as this was the first time Kelly had ever performed the number as a duet. While L.A. and Nicole contemplated whether the song's key gave Melanie the best chance to excel, everyone agreed that Melanie put her all into the performance.

Watch The X Factor tomorrow night on FOX to find out who will win $5 million.
